Athens New Horizons Band:

Teaching and Administrative Staff, Private Lessons Teacher

Part of a national network of adult music education programs, the New Horizons Band was started in 2018 by Assistant Professor of Music Education, Dr. Matthew Talbert.

The New Horizons band is a beginning band ensemble for adults age 50 and over who have either: 1. never played a band instrument before, or 2. haven't played their for an extended period of time and wish to play again in a group.

The Athens-based New Horizons Band aims to support aging adults who seek ongoing intellectual activity and the social benefits found in making music together.

Mallory's responsibilities with the band include coordinating all private lessons, teaching private clarinet lessons to some of its members, and co-teaching with the band at its weekly rehearsals.

UNDER the ELMS Concert Series:

In 2017, Mallory was hired as one of two managers for the UNDER the ELMS Summer Concert Series, directed by Dr. Andrew Trachsel. This is a community band that meets once a week for a music rehearsal, followed by a concert the following evening.

Duties include: Managing distribution of music, compiling music folders and copying music for five concerts with over 100 participants each week, filing and cataloging new music and maintaining concert band library, maintaining office hours for members, conductors, and personnel questions, assisting with set-up and take down for rehearsals and concerts.

OHIO Summer Music Camp is a week-long camp held on Ohio University's campus for students in grades 7-12 to participate in ensembles, master classes, private lessons, academic courses and concerts with OU faculty.

Mallory was one of four counselors in 2016, 2017 and 2018. Counselors are responsible for the campers at all times during the camp. Mallory was also the accompanist for the camp choir, collaborating with the former Director of Choral Studies at Ohio University, Dr. Daniel Hall.

Mallory returned to camp as a head counselor for the OHIO Summer Music Camp in June 2017 and 2018.

Mallory was inducted into the Alpha Delta chapter of Tau Beta Sigma in the spring of 2015. Tau Beta Sigma is an honorary band sorority which services the bands and music school of Ohio University. Positions held in this organization are the following:

duties included organizing all recruitment and member initiation activities, including planning and executing pre-rushes to attract new members. In addition, she was responsible for planning and executing all chapter ritual events. After giving bids to new members (membership candidates), she was responsible for teaching them about the history and ideals of Tau Beta Sigma. 

Administrator of Music (2015-2016)

duties included coordinating all musical activities and teaching the sorority songs to new and current members.

Mallory is now an alumnus of the Alpha Delta chapter.

Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma North Central District Convention Reading Band:

Mallory was one of four members from the North Central District (chapters from universities in Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois) of either Kappa Kappa Psi or Tau Beta Sigma selected to prepare a piece to conduct with the 2017 Convention Reading Band, which was comprised of approximately 130 college musicians from the North Central District.

 

Mallory conducted the Reading Band on the fourth movement of Simple Gifts by Frank Ticheli.

Each conductor was assigned a mentor teacher to give them conducting advice before and after the reading session.

Mallory's mentor was Evan Thompson, National President of Kappa Kappa Psi.

Collegiate National Association for Music Education Chapter 231:

Mallory became an active member of the Collegiate National Associate for Music Education (CNAfME) in 2015. During this time she attended several educational meetings and clinics by local music educators, and volunteered at various events, including the Athens High School Marching Band Invitational and the District 17 High School and Middle School Solo and Ensemble Festivals.

Mallory served as the chapter Treasurer for the 2016-2017 school year, and was responsible for all chapter funds, merchandise, and fundraising activities.

Additionally, Mallory coordinated a music education clinic for CNAfME chapter members in March 2017 with the George Washington High School Concert Band from Charleston, West Virginia, directed by Mark Hardman. During the clinic, Mr. Hardman taught the chapter about rehearsal techniques specific to high school band.

Ohio Valley Summer Theater:
Assistant Music Director, Rehearsal Pianist
Athens, Ohio

During the Summer of 2016, Mallory served as the Assistant Music Director and rehearsal pianist--under Ohio University voice faculty and OVST music director Kelly Burns--for the Ohio Valley Summer Theater program located in Athens, Ohio. During this time, she gained experience running rehearsals for the pit orchestra, and assisting running rehearsals with a musical theater cast for the musical Man of La Mancha, guest directed by Dale Ricardo Shields.
